Spring is just around the corner

Spring is just around the corner, still duelling with winter, but will definitely win, it is just a matter of days now. Let’s see how can we make the most of it!

One of the Hungarian rhymes says that:

Winter breaks on Alexander’s Day,
The wind disappears on Joseph’s day,
Benedict will bring warmth in a bag,
No more shivering, happy is who lives.

One of the specific Hungarian tradition is the celebration of the name day. This little poem goes hand in hand with that tradition, saying the following:

Winter breaks on Alexander’s Day,

18th of March, on the name day of Alexander the winter will break for the first time. The eaves begin to drip, the sun will shine, the birds will sing. You can feel how the wind bringing freshness.

The wind disappears on Joseph’s day,

Windy, cold season is over on Joseph’s name day, on the 19th of March. You can have warm weather, but if the winds are blowing, they will bring the shivering cold from the mountain peaks, where the snow will completely melt only around June.

Benedict will bring warmth in a bag,

On the 21st of March on the name day of Benedict warmer days will start. Snow will come back occasionally, but will newer stay longer than a day or two.

No more shivering, happy is who lives.

Thus the long winter is over, and spring is just around the corner! But don’t be too careless, April is one of the trickiest months. The month of the fools (April) brings unexpected warm days and snow as well. The face of the hills will change from day to day, and no one will be able to tell what season is this…
